hawthorn grafted onto saskatoon. There’s an interesting overlap of graft compatibility in the Rosacea family between several genuses, pear and quince, saskatoon and aronia, hawthorn and apple, and I have to assume more if you find the right interstems. there are some cool combinations to be tried and make the most inteteresting trees, these ones if the grafts endure will have purple berries and also 2” thorns with clusters of red fruit. #grafting

Locally collected seed from old Hawthorns, probably the native Crataegus succulenta the Long-Spined Hawthorn or a similar species, could be hybridized. Photos are from fall from the trees we collected seed from.
Super cold hardy. Hawthorns are in the rose family and related to apples and pears Native to Canada and the US.
The fruit is edible and can be used to make jams and jellies, the leaves and flowers have been used for tea
Great for wildlife
Hardiness Zone: 3
Stratification Required: 1-2 months warm + 3-4 months cold, Hawthorns have deep seed dormancy and can take two warm/cold cycles to germinate
