Native Hawthorn (Crataegus species) seed was collected locally from old Manitoba trees. The plants are probably Long Spined Hawthorn, Crataegus succulenta, or a related species, and some hybrid ancestry is possible. The product photos show the trees at seed collection in fall.

Hawthorns are cold hardy relatives of apples and pears. Their edible fruit is used for jam and jelly, while the leaves and flowers have been used for tea. The trees also provide food and cover for wildlife.

Hawthorn seed has deep dormancy and may need two alternating warm and cold cycles before it germinates.

Cold Hardiness Zone: 3
Seed Source: Manitoba
Stratification Required: 1 to 2 months warm followed by 3 to 4 months cold, Hawthorns have deep seed dormancy and can take two warm/cold cycles to germinate
