Crabapple Seeds (Malus sp.) - Zone 3 - 50+ Seeds
Crabapple seed was collected locally from a family tree planted about thirty years ago. The cultivar name is unknown. Seedlings will vary in fruit size and other traits, but many should resemble the hardy seed parent.
The parent tree has a spreading crown, bears reliably without thinning, and shows some resistance to apple scab. Its one inch crabapples ripen in late August, then hang on the tree and deepen to purple by October. The heavy crops have been used at the nursery for many gallons of crabapple wine. The fruit can be eaten fresh but is better suited to processing. Seedlings may also be useful as rootstocks, wildlife trees, or ornamentals.
