The Nanking cherry (Prunus tomentosa) is a cold hardy, early-blooming shrub that produces small, bright red cherries with a sweet-tart flavor. Native to China, Mongolia, and Korea, it was introduced to North America in the 1800s and has since become popular for its adaptability and ornamental value. The fruit, about 1-1.5 cm in diameter, has a juicy flesh with a slightly astringent taste, making it excellent for fresh eating, jams, and jellies. The shrub thrives in various soil types, is drought-resistant once established, and is commonly used as a hedge or windbreak. Nanking cherries are self-sterile, requiring another plant nearby for pollination. The cherries ripen in mid to late summer, depending on the climate.
