Smooth Sumac (Rhus glabra) is a native North American shrub found on woodland edges, clearings, and disturbed ground, including sites in southern Manitoba. Compound green leaves turn orange and purple in fall.

Plants reach about 10 ft and spread through a strong root system, making the species useful for erosion control and habitat restoration. Before stratification, soak the seed in hot tap water and leave it in the cooling water for 24 hours.
