Canada Wild Plum (Prunus nigra) is a hardy native fruit tree of Manitoba’s prairies and parklands. White spring blossoms are followed by oblong red-and-yellow plums, usually 1 to 1¼ inches long, with sweet flesh and tart skin. At the nursery, fruit generally ripens in late August after American Wild Plums have begun to drop.
This species is an excellent pollen source for many cold-hardy hybrid plums when bloom overlaps. It is also useful in edible and wildlife plantings and as a hardy plum rootstock. Canada Wild Plum usually forms a more distinct single trunk and suckers less freely than American Wild Plum. These trees are seed grown, so individual form and fruit will naturally vary.

A native Prairie fruit tree
Canada Wild Plum (Prunus nigra) is native to Manitoba and the parkland region. White spring bloom is followed by distinctive oblong plums. It is useful in edible and wildlife plantings and as a cold-hardy plum rootstock.
Wild-collected nursery stock
These seed-grown trees come from isolated wild stands in northern Manitoba. Seedlings naturally vary, but the isolated source helps preserve Canada plum identity and distinguishes this stock from our open-pollinated orchard-grown Canada plums.
