Buckwheat is cultivated for it's edible grain-like seeds and also useful as a cover crop.
Related rhubarb and sorrel, and it's actually not a grain or related at all to wheat.
Cultivated in Asia and Japan for thousands of years
High in protein, makes a gluten free flour. Leaves are edible.
Good for pollinators
Annual flowering plant 2-4 ft (60-120 cm) tall, with red stems and pink/white flowers
Short season crop, finished in 10-12 weeks
Grows well in low fertility soil
Establishes quickly and suppresses summer weeds
