The Amur Maackia (Maackia amurensis) is a deciduous tree native to Manchuria, northeastern China, and Korea. This small, rounded tree typically grows 20 to 30 feet tall and wide under cultivation, with a slow growth rate. The Amur Maackia is notable for its arching, spreading branches, and dark green, odd-pinnate leaves with 7 to 11 elliptic leaflets, each 1 ½ to 3 ½ inches long. The leaves are silvery-gray when unfolding and do not develop significant fall color, dropping soon after the first freeze.
In June or July, the tree produces creamy-white, pea-like flowers in dense, showy clusters, which are fragrant and pollinated by bees. After flowering, it bears flat, brown pods 2 to 3 inches long. The tree's bark is distinctive, peeling with age into loose flakes and curls, and exhibits a shiny, coppery-brown color.
Amur Maackia is highly adaptable, thriving in full sun and a variety of well-drained soils, including acidic and alkaline. It's a hardy and durable tree, suitable as a specimen on smaller lawns, patios, and even as a street tree. It's a member of the Fabaceae family and enriches the soil by adding nitrogen. Amur Maackia is disease and pest-resistant, requiring minimal maintenance.
