Red Birch (Betula occidentalis) seed is collected from native stands in the forest around our nursery. The trees naturally develop a clumping form with several trunks, although they can also form a single trunk.

Mature trees have deep reddish brown bark that peels in thin layers, small leaves, and spring catkins. Birch seed can germinate at low percentages, so generous sowing improves the chance of producing seedlings.

How to stratify seed

In the fridge. Put the seed in a bag with a damp medium such as peat moss, vermiculite, sand or coco coir. The medium is only there to hold moisture. Keep the bag in the fridge, above freezing, for the cold period shown, then sow.

Or outside. Sow the seed outdoors in the fall and let winter do the cold period.
