Pussy Willow is a fast growing, deciduous shrub or small tree native to North America, known for its iconic, soft, silvery catkins that emerge in early spring before the leaves appear. These fluffy catkins are among the first signs of spring, making the plant a favorite for both gardens and floral arrangements. As the season progresses, the catkins develop yellow stamens, attracting bees and other pollinators. The narrow, lance-shaped leaves are a blue-green color, providing a fine-textured backdrop in the landscape.
This willow thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist, well-drained soils but can tolerate wet conditions, making it a good choice for rain gardens or planting near water features. Pussy Willow is extremely cold-hardy and adaptable, often used for naturalizing, creating hedgerows, or adding early-season interest to a landscape. It is also valued for its ability to attract wildlife, including birds and beneficial insects.
