Convoy is a Canadian cherry plum released by Boughen Nurseries in Manitoba in 1941. It combines the hardiness of western sand cherry with the fruit quality of Japanese plum. The shrub grows 6 to 8 feet tall with an upright rounded habit and is well suited to cold prairie climates.
The fruit is red skinned with yellow flesh and ripens in mid summer. Convoy is sweeter and less tart than many other cherry plum hybrids, making it one of the better choices for fresh eating. The fruit is also good for preserving, baking, and canning.
Compared with other chums such as Mustang or Sapa, Convoy stands out for its more balanced flavor and its adaptability in Zone 2 gardens. While many chums tend toward tartness and are best for processing, Convoy produces fruit that is juicier and more palatable off the tree while retaining the durability and hardiness that define this group of hybrids.
