Beach Plum (Prunus maritima) is a dense shrub native to sandy coastal areas of eastern North America. It is uncommon on the Canadian prairies. The small purple plums have a tart flavour and are used for jam, jelly, and wine.
The species tolerates sand, drought, salt spray, and inland sites. White flowers open before the leaves in spring. Our plants are propagated from cuttings taken from a mixed bed of six seedlings, so growing two or more genetically different plants should improve cross pollination.
