Western Sandcherry (Prunus besseyi) is a native shrub with purplish black fruit about half an inch wide that ripens in August. It is one of the parents of Black Nanking Cherry and many hardy cherry plums.
Native to the northern Great Plains, including Manitoba, Western Sandcherry has grey green finely toothed leaves that turn mahogany red in fall.
