Autumn Olive is vigorous, hardy shrub with silvery-green, oval leaves. These berries have a unique sweet tart flavour, somewhat reminiscent of cranberries or pomegranates, but with a richer, slightly astringent twist.
While Autumn Olive has been planted across the United States for soil stabilization and wildlife habitat, it can be invasive in some areas, particularly in disturbed or degraded sites where it easily outcompetes native vegetation. However, in a managed setting, it's gaining popularity as a valuable plant in permaculture due to its nitrogen-fixing ability, which improves soil fertility, and its nutritious, antioxidant-rich berries. It thrives in a wide range of soils, from sandy to heavy clay, and is very drought-tolerant once established.
