Alpine Currant is a hardy deciduous shrub native to Central and Northern Europe. It typically grows to 3-6 feet in height with a similar spread, forming a dense, rounded shape. The bright green, lobed leaves turn a vibrant yellow in fall, providing seasonal interest. While the plant produces inconspicuous yellowish-green flowers in spring, it is primarily grown for its attractive foliage. Small, inedible red berries may appear in summer, but these are not a primary feature. Alpine Currant thrives in a variety of soils, from sandy to clay, and prefers full sun to partial shade. It is highly tolerant of urban pollution and makes an excellent hedge or foundation planting in Canadian landscapes due to its hardiness and low maintenance requirements.
