a comparison of Canada wild plums. the center one (and group in the front in... - Plum And Cherry Hybrids, September...Sep 2, 2026 · Plum & Cherry Hybridsa comparison of Canada wild plums. the center one (and group in the front in the last photo) is the wild collected plums that we know are just pure and unhybridized, the best representation of the species in the group. the left ones are an old planting, the ones we collect for our seed shop. they're open pollinated in an old tree row, slightly smaller plums but the shape and color and the leaf morphology gives them a strong Canada plum identity, the right one is from an old orchard row with other wild plums, and likely it has a bit of hybridization, but you know there is genetic variation in the species, there are selections like Assiniboine and Patterson Pride that have larger fruit.Read field note +2
toka plum, the bubblegum plum. ripe in the first week of september, they have... - Plum And Cherry Hybrids, September...Sep 2, 2026 · Plum & Cherry Hybridstoka plum, the bubblegum plum. ripe in the first week of september, they have the coolest flavour it has a strong hint of bubblegum, quite unique. it's an old Hansen introduction from South Dakota, a cross between the american wild plum and the Chinese apricot plum (Prunus simonii). This plum has the ability to graft onto wild chokecherry rootstocks, and the softwood has a rooting potential. So the way I propagate them is from chokecherry glafts, then with early June softwood to create own rooted plum trees - and these are good because you can grow them as a vigorous bush, Toka does grow quickly, and if you were to cut it back or have some winter damage or maybe from wildlife, the growth from the root crown is still Toka, there is no graft union. Own rooted plum trees are likely to be long lived and healthy, and it's been cold hardy to zone 3 over the past four years growing them we've had plenty of -40 nights in Jan-Feb. I have a set of own rooted bushes that are about waist height that are getting planted out into our orchard this fall to compare them to the grafted ones.Read field note +2

All of these likely have some amount of hybridization, and in that there's natural variation in the fruit. typically the Canada plum have more of an oval shape and the american are more round, and the leaves and distinctive, the Canada plum has a leaf margin with small double bumps, and american plum leaves have a jagged serrated leaf margin and are more narrow with a thin point. in the second photo left to right: an americana selection (#1) locally in our nursery grafted to chokecherry and does well as interstems, then a seedling plum in a small town nearby, the small red one is a wild plum that ripens early - so those 3 all present strongly as american plum. the last 2 are canada plum from old nursery row, and then the large on on the end is a seedling. I keep track of these seedlots, since it also depends on the other plum trees in the area (the pollen parent) you get more or less variation in the seedlings from these lots. the second last one is what I offer as Canada plum seeds on our shop, because all of the trees in this row are very similar, the seedlings will likely be very close to these and are very typical Prunus nigra. the 2nd and 3rd are very americana, but maybe I'll offer the seedlots separately since one will probably produce a larger plum - both will be good pollinators.Read field note +4
