Morus alba is the most cold hardy Mulberry species, and the Tatarian variety is known for being extra cold hardy.   Note that you need male and female plants to have fruit, and our seedlings will roughly be a 50/50 mix so we recommend planting several.

Native to northern China, the Tatarian White Mulberry is adapted to a wide range of soil conditions, from well-drained loams to more compact soils. The tree produces small, greenish flowers in spring, followed by very sweet, edible berries that ripen to white to pink in early summer.

Note you can grow these on the Canadian prairies (zone 3) in a sheltered location or micro climate, near a building or in an area with good snow cover.

Cold Hardiness Zone: 3/4

Prairie note: this is the white mulberry we recommend for the Canadian prairies, where it is the mulberry we consider cold hardy enough for that context, especially in sheltered sites and favorable microclimates. In warmer provinces, especially Ontario, white mulberry can behave invasively and can hybridize with threatened native red mulberry populations. Please plant responsibly and only order this species where it makes sense for your climate and ecological context.
