European Mountain Ash (Sorbus aucuparia)
European Mountain Ash (Sorbus aucuparia)
European Mountain Ash is known for its delicate, feathery foliage and bright red-orange clusters of berries that light up the tree in late summer and fall. The tree typically grows to about 20-40 feet in height with a spread of 15-30 feet. It features smooth, gray bark and pinnate leaves composed of 9-15 leaflets that turn a vibrant yellow in the fall, adding a pop of color to gardens and parks.
Native to Europe and parts of Asia, this tree thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, adapting well to various soil types, including loam and sandy soils. The European Mountain Ash is particularly valued for its ornamental berries that attract birds, including waxwings and thrushes, making it a wonderful choice for wildlife gardens. Its berries are often used in jams and jellies in some cultures.
