The White Mulberry is known for its fast growth and versatile uses. This tree typically grows to a height of 30 to 50 feet with a spread of 20 to 40 feet, making it a large tree ideal for spacious areas. It is hardy in USDA zones 4 through 8, which suits a broad range of climates, including many parts of Canada. The White Mulberry thrives in well-drained soil, adaptable to a range of soil types, and prefers full sun but can tolerate partial shade.

This variety is distinguished by its broad, spreading canopy and glossy, light green leaves. It produces small, inconspicuous flowers followed by the white to pinkish fruits, which are sweet and edible. The fruits ripen in late spring to early summer and are popular with wildlife, particularly birds.

Originally from China, the White Mulberry has been widely cultivated and naturalized in various parts of the world. The var. Tatarica, specifically, is known for its hardiness and adaptability. Historically, Morus alba is significant for its role in sericulture, as its leaves are the primary food source for silkworms.

In landscaping, the White Mulberry var. Tatarica is used for shade due to its large canopy. It's also valued for its fast growth and ability to adapt to urban environments, making it a common choice for city parks and streets. However, it can be invasive in some contexts, so its planting should be considered carefully.

Borderline hardy in zone 3, more suitable for zone 4 or a sheltered micro climate. We grew these seedlings out to see how they would handle the winter and we're still trialing them at the nursery.
