Hawthorn (Crataegus sp.)

Hawthorn grow from locally collected seed.  We're not sure exactly which species, there's a few of them.   The seeds can take some patience to germinate, we planted these seedlings in fall of 2021 and most germinated in 2023. 

Hawthorns are in the rose family and related to apples and pears. Native to Canada.  The fruit is edible and can be used to make jams and jellies, but usually it's left for wildlife. Birds enjoy the protection the thorns offer.
