The original Jostaberry was named Josta and was released in the 1970's, it's a fun cross between a currant and gooseberry. But there have been other Jostaberries bred, and Jostine a later release. It has spreading branches and ripens slightly later.

Jostine Jostaberry is a vigorous hybrid berry bush that combines the best traits of black currants and gooseberries. This unique cross offers dark, nearly black berries that blend the tartness of black currants with the sweet, juicy flavor of gooseberries. The berries are about the size of small gooseberries, maturing in mid to late summer, and are excellent for fresh eating, making jams, jellies, or adding a distinct twist to your baking.

The shrub itself is thornless, making it easier to handle and harvest. Jostine is fast-growing and hardy, thriving in a range of climates down to Zone 3. It can reach a mature height and spread of 4-6 feet, making it a great option for hedgerows or mixed borders. Jostaberries are resistant to common diseases affecting currants and gooseberries, like powdery mildew and white pine blister rust, adding to their appeal as a low-maintenance fruiting shrub.

Jostaberry prefers full sun to partial shade and well-drained soil. Its unique flavor and disease resistance make it a practical and rewarding addition to any garden, especially for those looking to grow something a bit out of the ordinary.

Cold Hardiness Zone: 3
