Jostaberry is the original 'Josta' cultivar from the 1970s when this hybrid fruit was first released, it's a unique hybrid between black currant (Ribes nigrum) and gooseberry (Ribes uva-crispa), combining the best traits of both plants.  Generally we've found Jostaberry grows faster than currants or gooseberries. This vigorous, thornless shrub produces clusters of large, deep purple-black berries with a flavor that blends the sweet-tart notes of gooseberries with the rich, aromatic taste of black currants. The fruit ripens in mid to late summer and is excellent for fresh eating, jams, jellies, pies, and wines.

Jostaberry thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-drained, fertile soils, although it can tolerate a range of soil conditions. It is highly disease-resistant, particularly against powdery mildew and white pine blister rust, making it low-maintenance. The shrub has an upright, spreading habit and benefits from annual pruning to maintain shape and encourage fruit production. Cold-hardy and adaptable, Jostaberry is a great choice for Canadian gardeners looking for a productive and easy-to-grow berry shrub.
