Golden Spice pear was developed by the University of Minnesota and introduced in 1949. Its ancestry includes cold hardy Ussurian pear (Pyrus ussuriensis). Small, firm fruit is about 4.5 cm across, with yellow skin, a soft red blush, and crisp flesh with a sweet, mildly tart flavour. It is especially useful for canning, spicing, and baking, but can also be eaten fresh.
Golden Spice has good fire blight resistance and requires another compatible pear for reliable fruit set. Fruit ripens in late August.
