Fish Pepper is a historic African American heirloom from the Chesapeake region, valued for both flavour and appearance. The compact plants have variegated green and white foliage, and the peppers pass through pale cream, striped green, orange brown, and finally red stages. The pale young peppers were traditionally useful in seafood and cream sauces because they added heat without darkening the dish. Plants are productive, ornamental, and well suited to containers or garden beds.

Origin and history

Fish Pepper is strongly associated with African American gardens and seafood cookery around Baltimore and Philadelphia. The modern seed saving story runs through Horace Pippin, H. Ralph Weaver, and William Woys Weaver, who helped return the variety to public circulation.
