An uncommon shrub that makes an excellent hedge, related to plums and cherries. Native to northern China and grown as an ornamental and for its small edible fruit. They grow reach 6 to 10 feet tall with arching thorny branches and narrow serrated leaves.
The fruit are small round drupes that ripen red to purple and have a tart cherry like flavor. Very hardy and adaptable, tolerates poor soils and drought.
