These silver buffaloberry seeds are ready to plant after a few months in the fridge in damp sand. This seed was collected last fall and has a high germination rate, it’s the yellow variety and some percentage of the seedlings will produce either red or yellow fruit.

potting up seedlings, natives like silver buffaloberry (Shepherdia argentea), wolf willow (Elaeagnus commutata), a collection of currants and gooseberries. experimenting with container nursery, most of the plants are in pots and plug trays for this year.. last year I would have them all in the ground, but I think for some species a pot works better.. and I can ship them in the fall, basically can't do that with bare root here on the Canadian prairies, when the leaves drop and it snows the next day. #backyardnursery

Silver Buffaloberry es un árbol pequeño o un arbusto grande de hasta 16' de altura con hojas de color verde azulado, espinas y bayas de color rojo brillante. La fruta es comestible y constituye una excelente gelatina, tiene un sabor dulce y picante. Son un gran árbol de vida silvestre. Similar al espino amarillo pero con hojas más pequeñas y redondas y el fruto es rojo, crece en racimos a lo largo de los tallos. Es un fijador de nitrógeno. Los árboles son dioicos, lo que significa que hay plantas masculinas y femeninas; se necesitan ambas para producir frutos.
