Red Jostaberry (Ribes x nidigrolaria)
Red Jostaberry (Ribes x nidigrolaria)
The Red Jostaberry is a vibrant hybrid, uniquely bred from a cross between a gooseberry (Ribes uva-crispa) and a red currant (Ribes rubrum). This unusual combination gives the Red Jostaberry its distinctive, large, deep red berries, which are sweet-tart in flavor and high in vitamin C. The shrub is thornless and hardy, growing to about 3-5 feet tall and wide, and it thrives in full sun to partial shade. It is self-fertile, so a single plant can produce ample fruit.
Unlike the black Jostaberry, which involves black currant in its lineage, the Red Jostaberry owes its color and flavor to its red currant parentage. The plant is known for its vigorous growth and resistance to common diseases, making it a low-maintenance and reliable choice for home gardeners. It ripens in mid-summer, offering clusters of juicy red berries that are perfect for fresh eating, jams, jellies, or baking. Hardy to USDA Zone 3, it is well-suited for cold climates, including much of Canada.
