Ben Lomond Black Currant (Ribes nigrum 'Ben Lomond')
Ben Lomond black currant was the first cultivar in the 'Ben' series, released in 1972. The goal of the Scottish Crop Research Institute was to create varieties with improved frost resistance, high yields, and compact growth. It's a mid to late-season variety, created by crossing the 'Baldwin' and 'Magnus' cultivars.
This variety is particularly appreciated for its large, high-quality black berries that have a robust flavor, ideal for both fresh consumption and processing into jams, jellies, and desserts. It is known for its frost-resistant blooms, which make it suitable for cooler climates where late spring frosts are common.
