A native plum species that isn't common on the Canadian prairies, Prunus maritima is more common on the east coast, native to sandy coastal areas of eastern North America. The fruit are small purple plums with a tart flavour often used for jam, jelly, and wine.
Grows 3 to 7 feet tall with a dense rounded habit. White blossoms open in spring before the leaves. Tolerant of poor soils, drought, and salt spray which makes it useful for coastal planting and erosion control, but you can also grow it inland.
Our plants are grown from cuttings from a mixed bed of six seedlings, so for the best cross pollination we recommend getting a few.
