Are all four self fertile?
Yes. Ben Connan, Pink Champagne, Laxton’s No. 1 and White Pearl are all self fertile. They do not need another variety to set fruit, though insects still help with pollination.
How much space will the patch need?
Space the bushes about 5 to 6 feet apart, measured between plant centres. A row of four needs roughly 20 to 24 feet including space at the ends, plus access for picking. The square layout below is another option. Plant size and pruning affect the space needed.

Will currants grow in heavier soil?
Currants grow in heavier soil, including clay, if it does not stay waterlogged. Soil that retains moisture suits them. They tolerate some shade but usually fruit best in sun.
