Paper Birch (Betula papyrifera) seedlings were grown from seed collected locally in Manitoba. Young bark is reddish brown and develops the tree's characteristic white, peeling surface with dark horizontal markings as it matures. The leaves turn yellow in autumn.
This fast growing Canadian native reaches 50 to 70 ft and grows in soils from sandy loam to clay, in full sun or partial shade. Its seeds, buds, and bark provide food for birds and small mammals.
