Boxelder / Manitoba Maple (Acer negundo)
Boxelder, also known as Manitoba Maple, is a fast-growing, hardy deciduous tree native to North America. It reaches a mature size of up to 60 feet in height and 40 feet in width. This tree is particularly tolerant of a range of environmental conditions, thriving in USDA Cold Hardiness Zones 2 through 9. Boxelder prefers moist, well-drained soil, but can adapt to various soil types, including those that are dry or rocky. It grows best in full sun to partial shade.
The sap of the Boxelder can be tapped and used as a source of sugar, similar to other maple trees. Fun fact the Assiniboine Food Forest, a local non profit in Brandon MB makes maple syrup by tapping the local Boxelder trees every spring.
