American elderberry is a spreading shrub with broad clusters of creamy white flowers and small purple black berries. It suits naturalized plantings and moist sites, where its suckering growth can form a thicket and provide food and cover for wildlife.
It commonly reaches 5–12 feet tall. Plant in sun or partial shade, preferably in rich, moist soil. Use fully ripe berries cooked; do not eat unripe berries, leaves or stems.
