Hackberry (Celtis occidentalis)

Hackberry grown from local seeds. Hackberry is sometimes referred to as the "Candy of the Forest" due to its small, pea-sized berries, which have a sweet, date-like flavor. The berries, are edible and were traditionally eaten by Indigenous peoples and early settlers in North America. They have a thin, crunchy outer layer and a sweet, mealy flesh surrounding a hard seed.

The sweetness of the ripe berries, which remain on the tree well into winter, makes them an attractive food source for wildlife such as birds, deer, and small mammals, as well as for foragers who enjoy their unique flavor.
