Cold Hardy Plums and Cherry Hybrids: Summer Field Notes
Field note · August 2026
Manchurian apricots ripening in Manitoba
manchurian apricots, unknown cultivar maybe a common older one like westcot. sweet and delicious, clingstone. just ripe and falling in the first week of august in southern MB. here I've cut them into halves and slices and filled mason jars, a simple light syrup and 25 mins in a water bath, should be comparable to the familiar canned peach halves. canning fruit is easier than making jam. the seeds are all going toward our nursery crop for next year, and on apricot tree grown from a seed like this will have fruit with similar qualities - the cold hardiness for sure, and likely a comparable size though usually smaller. another batch of small apricots will be a great seedlot for rootstocks, but these seedlings should be fine just to grow out and fruit.
