Viking Chokeberry (Aronia melanocarpa ‘Viking’)
Viking Chokeberry is a hardy cultivar of the black chokeberry, developed in Scandinavia for its large, glossy black fruits and ornamental appeal. This shrub produces abundant clusters of dark purple-black berries in late summer to early fall. The fruits are high in antioxidants and have a tart flavor, often used in juices, jams, wines, and health supplements. In spring, Viking Chokeberry displays clusters of small white to pale pink flowers that attract pollinators, followed by glossy green leaves that turn vibrant shades of red and orange in the fall.
Viking Chokeberry thrives in full sun to partial shade and is highly adaptable to various soil types, including clay, loam, and sandy soils, as long as they are well-drained. It is tolerant of wet and poor soils and is also drought-resistant once established. This cultivar is ideal for edible landscaping, wildlife gardens, or as a hedge due to its dense, upright growth habit and multi-season interest.
