Tamarack (Larix laricina) is a native larch common across the boreal forest. This deciduous conifer carries soft, bright green needles through spring and summer, turns golden yellow in fall, and then drops its needles. Small upright cones mature in one season. Young trees have a narrow crown and develop a taller pyramidal form with age.
Tamarack tolerates wind and periods of drought once established and is used in shelterbelts, reforestation, and naturalized plantings.
