Ben Hope Black Currant (Ribes nigrum 'Ben Hope')
Ben Hope is known for its vigorous growth, high yields, and excellent disease resistance. Developed by the Scottish Crop Research Institute, it is a cross between 'Westra' and another complex hybrid, bred specifically for hardiness and productivity. This variety grows as an upright bush, reaching up to 4-5 feet (1.5 meters) tall, and is ideal for both culinary and dessert uses.
Ben Hope is particularly noted for its resistance to several common blackcurrant diseases, including big bud mite, powdery mildew, and leaf spot, making it a popular choice for organic and low-input gardening. The berries are medium-sized with a classic blackcurrant flavor and aroma, ripening later in the season, typically around late July to early August, about 10 days after ‘Ben Lomond’.
'Ben Hope' is an excellent option for both home gardeners and commercial growers looking for a reliable, low-maintenance blackcurrant variety.
