Cold Hardy Plums and Cherry Hybrids: Summer Field Notes

Canada wild plums hanging heavy in old tree rows
canada wild plums hanging heavy on these branches. they're more red where they get enough sun. the fruit have this distinct elongated shape, larger than the average american wild plum, the trees are less suckering, and the leaves have a less serrated margin. Most of the american wild plum I collected yesterday were starting to fall, or given a shake all of the fruit could be collected for the ground, the canada plums were holding on better ripe yet still firmly attached, maybe this is another typical difference - it's an improvement for the plums to hang on. these trees are in old abandoned tree rows, hanging nearly to the ground, a worthwhile stop on my traveling to collect wild plums for the nursery.
