Fruit Tree Grafting: Summer Field Notes
Field note · August 2026
American wild plums at the end of August
american wild plums, prunus americana. they have a red / green color when ripe, more red in the full sun. at the end of august these are just ripe and starting to drop, though there is some variation - another graft has smaller ones that are still green so about a week behind. this is the wild plum I use for interstems on chokecherry, and in fact this is a grafted branch that top worked over a chokecherry tree as the wild rootstock. I'm standing on a short ladder to pick them. this weekend I'll make a trip to collect more wild plums for the nursery, and it's great that we now have some growing here.
