White Spruce (Picea glauca) seed was collected locally from a healthy tree about 60 ft tall with a 30 inch trunk. The species is widespread in northern forests, tolerates some shade, and can live for 250 to 350 years.

White Spruce seedlings grow slowly at first and transplant more readily than pine seedlings in our nursery experience. A good seedling may reach about 6 inches after two growing seasons. Young trees often grow around 6 inches a year until roughly ten years old, then increase to 12 to 18 inches a year. The winged seed germinates with its wing intact.

How to stratify seed

In the fridge. Put the seed in a bag with a damp medium such as peat moss, vermiculite, sand or coco coir. The medium is only there to hold moisture. Keep the bag in the fridge, above freezing, for the cold period shown, then sow.

Or outside. Sow the seed outdoors in the fall and let winter do the cold period.
