Yellow Fruited Silver Buffaloberry (Shepherdia argentea) seed was collected locally from plants with yellow rather than the usual red fruit. About 30 to 40 percent of their seedlings are expected to produce yellow berries.

Silver Buffaloberry is a thorny nitrogen fixing shrub or small tree with blue green leaves. The sweet tart fruit grows in clusters along the stems and is used for jelly. Plants also provide food and cover for wildlife.

Male and female plants are separate, so both are required for pollination and fruit production.

How to stratify seed

In the fridge. Put the seed in a bag with a damp medium such as peat moss, vermiculite, sand or coco coir. The medium is only there to hold moisture. Keep the bag in the fridge, above freezing, for the cold period shown, then sow.

Or outside. Sow the seed outdoors in the fall and let winter do the cold period.
