Thiessen Saskatoon is a long established cultivar of Amelanchier alnifolia, introduced in 1933 by Niels Hansen at the Dominion Experimental Farm in Saskatchewan. It was selected for its large, sweet berries that can reach 17 millimeters in diameter, making them among the biggest of any Saskatoon. Unlike the compact form of Northline, Thiessen grows into a taller, more open shrub or small tree that can reach 12 to 14 feet, often with an upright habit. One of its distinguishing traits is an extended ripening period, with berries maturing over several weeks rather than all at once, which makes it well suited to home gardeners who enjoy harvesting in stages.
We have seeds available collected from the cultivar Thiessen. Growing from seed introduces genetic variation, so seedlings will not be identical to Thiessen, though many may show similar traits in berry size or flavor.
