Seedling Plum seeds are collected in Manitoba from trees with small, sweet plums about 1 inch across and thick skins. These trees appear to descend from cultivated plums, possibly crossed with wild plums, but their parentage is not known.

Unlike our American and Canada Wild Plum seeds, this is not an identified wild species. Expect variation in the trees grown from these seeds, including fruit size, flavour and ripening time. The photos show fruit from earlier collections.

Canada Wild Plum Seeds

Prunus nigra

Oblong red and yellow plums with sweet flesh and tart skin, ripening here in late August, usually after American Wild Plum. It tends to form a more distinct trunk and sucker less. Useful as a pollinator for hybrid plums and as rootstock.

American Wild Plum Seeds

Prunus americana

Small, round, sweet tart plums ranging from yellow to deep red, for fresh eating, jam and jelly. Often grows as a multistem shrub or small tree. We use it as plum rootstock at the nursery; it also supplies pollen for other plums.

Pembina Plum Seeds

Prunus salicina × Prunus nigra

Seed from a Japanese Plum × Canada Wild Plum hybrid introduced in 1917. Collected in southern Manitoba. A choice for raising varied seedlings to evaluate for fruit or rootstock, not for reproducing Pembina exactly.
