Jersey Devil tomato is an elongated red paste type distinguished by its narrow pepper like fruit and steady late season set. Originating in early twentieth century New Jersey truck farming, it circulated among growers as an open pollinated selection, though its exact breeder is unrecorded. Fruit average five to six inches long with firm walls and limited locules, a profile that contrasts with the shorter Roma group and the bulkier oxheart lines. The plant is indeterminate with moderate vigor and requires staking to keep the long fruit off the ground. Maturity is mid to late season, and production is uniform once the vines establish. In cold regions it is grown as an annual, and seed comes true, making it a stable choice for gardeners who want a classic regional paste form.
