Tropical shrub historically cultivated as one of the main sources of natural indigo dye. Plants grow 2 to 3 feet tall with pinnate leaves and small pink to violet pea-like flowers. The leaves contain indican, which is processed through fermentation to yield the deep blue indigo pigment. Indigenous to Asia but naturalized in many warm regions worldwide. Prefers full sun and well drained soils. Not winter hardy in northern climates, usually grown as an annual or greenhouse crop outside the tropics.
Hardiness: Annual / Zone 10
