Himalayan Mayapple is a distinctive woodland perennial that forms a low canopy of broad, deeply lobed leaves. Soft red fruit ripen among the foliage and split open around pea sized seeds held in a thick pulp. Established plants spread by rhizomes to form a gradually widening patch.
These seeds were collected from a long established planting in southern Manitoba and are believed to be Podophyllum hexandrum. For hardiness, use Zone 5 as the general guide. The Manitoba planting has survived many Zone 3 winters in a sheltered site, showing what may be possible with a protected location and reliable snow cover.
The species is native from the Himalayas into western and central China, where it grows in forests, thickets, wet forest margins and high elevation meadows. Seed has dormancy and should receive about three months of cold, moist stratification.

How to stratify seed
In the fridge. Put the seed in a bag with a damp medium such as peat moss, vermiculite, sand or coco coir. The medium is only there to hold moisture. Keep the bag in the fridge, above freezing, for the cold period shown, then sow.
Or outside. Sow the seed outdoors in the fall and let winter do the cold period.
