Hackberry (Celtis occidentalis) is a North American tree with distinctive corky ridges on mature bark and serrated leaves that turn yellow in fall.
Small sweet purple fruit ripens from late summer into fall and feeds birds and other wildlife. Hackberry tolerates clay, sand, and drought once established and grows naturally in river valleys and on upland slopes.
