evans cherry orchard, trees just loaded and ripe today july 22. it's a treat to visit these old evans trees at applejack orchard in elkhorn MB. a few things to note, the trees are large and easily 25-30 years old, and mostly grown as single trunk trees, but as they age and suckers are let grow, some pruning is done to the taller branches the orchard rows are renewing themselves. so really with evans you can choose to grow them as a tree or as a multi stemmed bush, or any combination of the two. another note, these are next to some romance sour cherries, and the most distinctive difference is how the stems hold on - with evans if you pull on the cherry the seed will often pull right out and stay attached to the stem, so I pick them with the stems attached, example in the last photo.
