American hazelnuts ripening in mid August

american hazelnut just ripe enough to pick on aug 15. it's a fine line, one week they're not ready, and the next they're gone either to the ground or squirrels got them. I've found when the hulls are just starting to get some yellow/brown color, it's the time time you'll find some on the ground, this is the time to open a few hulls and look for nuts that have some tan/brown color and easily detach, then they're ripe.
