American Hazelnut (Corylus americana)
The American Hazelnut, Corylus americana, is a deciduous shrub native to eastern North America, including many parts of Canada. It typically grows to a mature size of 3 to 5 meters in height and spread, showcasing broad, rounded leaves and producing edible nuts that are a favorite among wildlife. This shrub is adaptable to a range of conditions but thrives best in well-drained soil, preferring full sun to partial shade. It is hardy in zones 3 to 9, making it a resilient choice for many Canadian gardens.
The American Hazelnut's nuts ripen in late summer to early fall and are encased in a distinctive bristly husk. These nuts have been historically significant as a food source for Indigenous peoples and early European settlers. They would often be ground into meal or eaten whole.
Culturally, the American Hazelnut holds a place in various indigenous traditions and folklore, often symbolizing peace and reconciliation. Its wood, though not commonly used commercially, has been valued for its strength and elasticity in small-scale applications.
Our seedlings are from nuts collected locally around the nursery. It's a race to get them before the squirrels.
